Pour on the Salt and Turn on the Light

Following his declaration of blessings, Jesus then proceeds to describe the influence citizens of the kingdom should have on the world. Let us notice his message:

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:13-16).

Like the swine flu virus, kingdom living is contagious. Even so, for kingdom living to be contagious, believers must learn to pour on the salt and turn on the light.

Pour on the Salt (13). Through experience, we understand that food tastes better with salt. There are certain foods that become palatable only with the addition of salt. Similarly, citizens of the kingdom must do for the world, what salt does for food. Believers then by their good works make this world bearable to God and others. Christian, pour on the salt!

Turn on the Light (14-16). Through this metaphor, two significant points emerge. First, citizens of the kingdom must be visible to the world. Second, citizens of the kingdom must provide light to the world. The sole purpose of visibility and illumination is that others, by the good deeds of believers, may give glory to the Father in heaven. Christian, turn on the light!
